Fire Fighting Practice
I’m enjoying some down time between my turn in the ‘burn building’ at the Dawson county fire department.
The last stage of my volunteer firefighting class will be a hands on fire training. They will light this building on fire, and we will be expected to put it out.
Tonight is just a saftey review, we are going over different nossel techniques as well as basic escape drills. There’s no fire but they’ve filled the building with fog/smoke (the type you see at a concert) to simulate a low visibilty environment.
Win7 FREE?
I’m not a big proponent of MS or Win7, Ill take Ubuntu any day.
of course that isn’t always the case for everyone. So, heres how to get Windows 7 for cheep or even free.
Students:
Tap your way over to This Microsoft site for a copy of Windows 7 for only $30. (US Students only)
Update: the $30 copy of Windows 7 is an upgrade only. But, both Window Home Premium and Pro are available at that price. I picked up a copy of Windows XP Pro from E-bay for $30, for a total price tag of $60 for Windows 7 PRo, not bad.
You may even be eligible for a FREE copy if your school participates in a MS program called MSND Academic Alliance. Check to see if your School is eligible here.
IT and Developers:
You can check your eligibility for a free 90 day trial here. (Of course this was posted early September and may no longer be valid…)
Of course the best deal is still any Linux Distribution… it really is free, and secure. If you must plug yourself into the constraints and dangers of the MSWorld at least you may save yourself a buck or two…
Got ? Milk
The LA Times posted this interesting report on diferent milks, and it got me thinking.
Lets Look at the differnt Milks in this article:
Cows Milk: There is a reason to drink it, but you should probably be drinking skim milk which, bang for buck gives you a great drink with little animal fat.
Goat Milk: If you your looking for a fatty drink with lots of protien goats put the cows to shame.
Soy: Not a bad alternative to animal milk, with its high protein content. Still its higher in calories than skim milk. Whats this about a high Sugar content?
Rice: No saturated fat, yet still fortified with the vitamins you need. Not to many added sweeteners. The down side is there is little to no protein.
Almond: It looks like almonds are getting the raw deal as a milk substitue… big turn off: no calcium.
Hemp: I dont live in California anymore, It would be way to complex to even consider trying to find this product.
Im going to have to stop by my local store and see what the prices for these are before I make a judgement; Im probably going for rice, or Skim(from a local dairy, if its worth the cost) I would consider soy, but it is already a major part of my diet.
Linux on a Stick
My Friends computer has died, the harddrive isn’t working anymore.
I took my 2GB thumbdrive with Eeebuntu and booted the OS directly from the drive.
Every part of the computer works, save the harddrive. These machines are like cars, after a certain age, they just start falling apart. So I recomended he purchase a new PC first, then a new harddrive, for his old PC.
Of course we are college students, so the funds may take a while to come around, and in the mean time… He will be running the entire computer off of two thumbdrives. one for the OS, the second for storage.
Im surprised it works as well as it does, but for the time being, he has a working PC.
